"Our first association with Temple Emanu-El began six years ago when we put our daughter in the kindergarten class. Little did we know the impact this decision would wind up having on our entire family.

We love the temple. Our children have had great teachers and are very happy. We've met so many genuinely nice people, and we are proud to be a part of this congregation.

My husband is very active with Men's Club, and I'm actually planning for my own B'not Mitzvah to be held with six other women.

Our lives continue to be enriched, beyond what we had ever expected, thanks to Temple Emanu-El."

Mission Statement -Temple Emanu-El of West Essex is a Reform Jewish community that brings us together to celebrate our simchas (joys), provides support for other times, and meets our religious, educational, social, and cultural needs. All ages are inspired by our rabbi and cantor to perpetuate Judaism by engaging in lifelong learning, embracing Israel, performing acts of social justice, cherishing the Torah, and worshipping together.

Our diverse community is welcoming to Jews of all backgrounds including interfaith families and Jews-by-Choice. Within our warm and inviting surroundings, Temple Emanu-El encourages meaningful participation and creates a special sense of belonging.

What is Reform?

How do I become a member of Temple Emanu-El? What's the process?
We'd love to have you join us. Just e-mail us at dorit@emanuel.org or call us at (973) 992-5560 for more information and a membership packet.

Why should I join Temple Emanu-El?
Temple Emanu-El is home to the nicest group of people in town. At Temple Emanu-El, we support one another with a caring community and a culture of inclusiveness. We have weekly worship opportunities, adult education, religious school for children, an Early Childhood Center, youth group, many groups and clubs, and great opportunities to meet other people.

I'd like to join, but I don't know anyone at Temple Emanu-El.
We have lots of opportunities for getting involved and meeting people, starting as soon as you join. The membership committee hosts a new member event in the fall. Probably the best way to get to know people is to get involved.

Why should I join now? My child is only two years old.
It is never too soon to be a part of the Jewish community. While we often think that synagogues are around to "teach Judaism" to our children, there is so much more. Synagogues provide ongoing opportunities to study, experience, and enjoy being connected to a Jewish community. We support this by offering reduced dues to young families. As for children, Temple Emanu-El's Early Childhood Center offers daycare and preschool, with a fullcare option. Plus, our Tot Shabbat program, offered on the 1st Friday of the month at 6:30 is exceptional.

My kids are grown. What do I need a synogogue for?
While we offer many family-oriented programs that does not mean that we are only open to families with younger children. We focus on community building, with Sisterhood, Men's Club, adult education seminars, leadership opportunities, social justice programs, and, of course, worship experiences. The synagogue's task is to enhance your connection with other Jews and your personal search for meaning.

What does it cost to join a synagogue? Isn't it expensive?
A Jewish sage once said that "the Gates of Prayer are always open." Reform synagogues are committed to keeping their gates open and inclusive to all, and Temple Emanu-El is no different. While the Temple has expenses like any other organization, we strive to ensure that financial constraints are never an obstacle to membership. Confidential discussions on reduced dues are encouraged if that will help you and your family join.

Do you welcome and support interfaith families?
Many of Temple Emanu-El's current member families are interfaith. We welcome members from diverse backgrounds. For more information visit the interfaith/outreach page.
