Holocaust Yom HaShoah Speaker:
Goodbye Amsterdam, Hello New York
Join us as Jerry von Halle, temple member, speaks on coming to America after his experience as an eyewitness to the Holocaust. Many of us have been fortunate to hear Jerry tell his story of his survival during the five year German occupation in the Netherlands. This speech takes up where his last one left off. We will hear what happened as the war ended and Jerry built a life for himself in the United States.
Please join us for this special Shabbat commemoration presentation on Friday, May 2 at 8:00.
A List of Those Who Perished in the Holocaust
Many at Temple Emanu-El have family members who perished in the Holocaust. The Holocaust Committee is compiling a list of these family members. This is a perfect opportunity for younger members to ask their older relatives more about their family history and get those names. If you have names of grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, brothers or sisters that you would like to see added to this list for use during Yom HaShoah, please either e-mail Wendy Lubin at holocaust@emanuel.org or call Dorit in the temple office (992-5560).
YELLOW CANDLES:
Every year in April, Temple Emanu-El observes Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. This service is observed with a topical speaker at temple and the lighting of yellow yahrzeit candles at home. They are the yellow yahrzeit candles in memory of the millions of Jews who perished in the Holocaust. The yellow color symbolizes the Jewish star that had to be worn by concentration camp inmates.
The purpose of the yellow candles and other Yom HaShoah programs in to Never Forget
the tragedy of the Holocaust such that it never happens again. Thank you to the many temple families who through their generous support make this important program possible. You can help honor those who perished by making a contribution that will help purchase these candles.
If you would like a Yom HaShoah candle, please visit the temple office to pick one up. If you are unable to come in person, please call the office at 992-5560 so that a candle may be mailed to you. For more information about Yom HaShoah or other activities of the Holocaust Committee, please e-mail Wendy Lubin at holocaust@emanuel.org.
